TI-84 vs TI-84 Plus vs TI-84 Plus CE: What's the Difference?

“TI-84” isn’t one calculator — it’s a family of Texas Instruments graphing calculators released over roughly two decades, and the differences between them are almost entirely about hardware, not the math they can do.

The original TI-84 and TI-84 Plus

The TI-84 and TI-84 Plus are the earliest models in the line: monochrome (black-and-white) screens, AAA batteries, and a fixed amount of memory for programs and lists. They introduced the USB port and clock that the older TI-83 Plus lacked, but the display and function set are otherwise close to their TI-83 Plus predecessor.

The TI-84 Plus CE

The TI-84 Plus CE (“Color Edition”) is the current-generation model: a high-resolution color screen, a slim rechargeable battery instead of AAAs, more memory, and a MathPrint display mode that renders fractions, exponents, and roots the way they’d appear in a textbook instead of flattened into a single line of text. It’s noticeably faster and lighter than the older monochrome models too.

What stayed the same

Despite the hardware jump, the core math and programming capability is nearly identical across all three: the same arithmetic, trig, log, matrix, statistics, distribution, and equation-solving functions, the same graphing modes (function, parametric, polar, sequence), and the same TI-BASIC programming language. If you learned keystrokes on an older monochrome TI-84 or TI-84 Plus, they carry over directly to a TI-84 Plus CE — you’re relearning a screen, not a calculator.
