TI-30XS vs TI-84 Plus CE: Which Calculator Do You Need?
Both are Texas Instruments calculators you’ll see recommended for school, but they’re built for different jobs. The short version: if your exam or class bans graphing calculators, you want a TI-30XS. If you need to graph functions, work with matrices, or run statistics, you want a TI-84 Plus CE.
What the TI-30XS Multiview is built for
The TI-30XS Multiview is a simple, non-graphing scientific calculator. It handles arithmetic, fractions, trig, logs, percent, and basic statistics — enough for algebra, geometry, and most standardized tests. Critically, it has no graphing screen, which is exactly why it’s allowed on tests that ban graphing calculators (many state exams, and often the calculator section of the SAT and ACT when a simpler device is preferred).
What the TI-84 Plus CE adds
The TI-84 Plus CE is a full graphing calculator: function, parametric, polar, and sequence graphing, a color screen, matrices, statistics and distributions, hypothesis tests, an equation solver, finance tools, and even a simple programming language. It covers everything the TI-30XS does and a great deal more — but that graphing capability is also why some exams don’t allow it.
Feature comparison
- Graphing — TI-30XS: no. TI-84 Plus CE: yes (function, parametric, polar, sequence).
- Fractions — Both support fraction display and a fraction/decimal toggle.
- Trig, log, ln — Both support these.
- Matrices, statistics, distributions — TI-30XS: basic statistics only. TI-84 Plus CE: full matrix, stats, and distribution tools.
- Equation solver — TI-30XS: no. TI-84 Plus CE: yes.
- Programming — TI-30XS: no. TI-84 Plus CE: yes.
- Typically exam-approved when graphing calculators are banned — TI-30XS: yes. TI-84 Plus CE: no.
Which one should you use right now
Try both for free, right in your browser, and see which function set matches what your class or exam actually needs:
- TI-30XS Calculator — arithmetic, fractions, trig, logs, percent, and memory, no graphing.
- TI-84 Plus CE Calculator — everything the TI-30XS does, plus graphing, matrices, statistics, and an equation solver.
Neither requires an account, download, or purchase — so if you’re not sure which your class needs, it costs nothing to try both.
Try either calculator
Both calculators are free and run right in your browser — no download or account required.
