How to Use a TI-30XS Calculator: The Basics

The TI-30XS Multiview is a non-graphing scientific calculator, which means most of what it does fits into four things: entering expressions, converting between fraction and decimal, running trig/log/root functions, and using its single memory slot.

1. Enter an expression

Type numbers and operators the way you’d write them on paper — the Multiview’s two-line display shows your full expression before you evaluate it, not just a running total. Press Enter to see the result appear on the line below.

2. Switch between fraction and decimal

Once you have a result, the fraction/decimal key converts it to the simplest matching fraction, or back to decimal. It’s a conversion of the answer you already have, not a separate calculation mode — so 0.75 becomes 3/4, and pressing the key again switches it back.

3. Use trig, log, and roots

sin, cos, and tan work directly from their keys; pressing 2nd first gives you the inverse functions (sin⁻¹, cos⁻¹, tan⁻¹). log and ln have their own keys, and x² / √ handle squares and square roots — 2nd + x² gets you a general nth root for anything beyond a square root.

4. Store and recall with memory

The TI-30XS has one memory slot, not named variables like a graphing calculator. M+ adds the current result to memory, M- subtracts it, and MR recalls the stored value back into your entry. MC clears memory to zero, and a small M on the display tells you memory currently holds something.
